If you’re having trouble finding the funds for education, Texas Business Women can provide financial aid. As part of a partnership with the Texas Business and Professional Women’s Foundation, we offer three scholarships for women looking to advance their career.

Whether you’re applying to college for the first time, or just need some extra training to get that promotion, we want to help you get the education you deserve.


 

Gilda Murray Scholarship

This scholarship was initially funded by a donation from the Garland BPW organization. The Fund was established in memory of Gilda S Murray who was the BPW Texas State President from 1992-1993.

This scholarship provides financial assistance to Texas Business Women (TBW) members, 25 years or older who need additional training for employment or to advance professionally. The applicant must be an active Texas Business Women member, attend Local Organization meetings regularly, and participate on at least one TBW committee.

Scholarship Criteria

  • The Scholarship award may be up to $500 per applicant per fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30). Limit of two consecutive years eligibility.
  • Funds provided by the scholarship shall be used for tuition and/or required materials (i.e. books) to an accredited college or university, technology institution, or training center.
  • If applicant is requesting reimbursement for a completed training, copies of receipts and proof of completion must be attached to the application.
  • Each applicant will be notified no later than six weeks after deadline.

Minne L. Maffett Scholarship

Dr. Minnie L. Maffett was the first president of the Texas Federation from 1919-1921. She also served as President of BPW USA from 1939-1944. This fellowship is awarded annually to women in the medical field.

The recipient must be a female graduate of a recognized medical school conducting postgraduate or research work in a medical field; or a woman who has been awarded a Ph. D. degree from a Texas university who is doing research in a medical field.

Eligible candidates range from a woman who needs financial aid for the first year in establishing a family practice in a rural area (population not exceeding 5,000), to a fourth year medical student for completion of an M.D. degree in an accredited medical school in the State of Texas. More than one fellowship may be awarded each year.

Scholarship Criteria

  • Applicant must be a female graduate of a recognized medical school seeking funds for use in post-graduate research in a medical field; or
  • A woman who has been awarded a PhD from a Texas university who is doing research in a medical field; or
  • A woman who needs financial aid for the first year in establishing a family practice in a rural area with a population not exceeding 5,000; or
  • A fourth-year female medical student completing a M.D. or D.O. degree in an accredited school in the State of Texas.

Hermine Tobolowsky Scholarship

Hermine Tobolowsky, a BPW Past State President, is known as the “Mother of the Equal Legal Rights Amendment in Texas.” Ms. Tobolowsky worked tirelessly, often at the threat of physical harm, to make women in Texas equal in the legal aspects of the law. It is her indomitable spirit of sacrifice and her accomplishments that we honor Hermine Tobolowsky by creating an award in her name.

In recognition of her work, the award is given to an individual who has made significant legislative contributions to bring parity to women in Texas in the last three years. Established in 1995, this scholarship is to be awarded to women of academic achievement who wish to enter the professions of law, public service, government, political science, or women’s history.

Scholarship Criteria

  • Applicant must be a female citizen of the United States of America.
  • Scholarship monies must be used at an accredited Texas college or university.
  • Applicant must have completed at least two semesters of studies and present transcripts of all college work.
  • Scholarship monies will be paid directly to the registrar of recipient’s chosen college or university.
  • Application and all supporting documents must be postmarked by January 1.
